COURSE OVERVIEW

This course grew out of my postgraduate dissertation, The Bee Cult in Greek Myth and Ancient History, and the years of research and fieldwork that have followed it. Together, we will trace the elusive trail of the Melissae—the bee priestesses of the ancient Aegean—through time. Moving backwards from the late Roman persecution of the old pagan orders into the Bronze Age, we follow the fragments left behind by women who served as oracles, initiators, healers, ritual specialists and stewards of the sacred.

The course brings together the two strands that characterise my work: scholarly inquiry and ceremonial experience. We will look closely at what the archaeological, literary and mythological evidence can actually tell us about the Melissae, while remaining careful to distinguish the surviving evidence from later interpretation and modern reconstruction.

Alongside this historical inquiry, we will enter the mythic and experiential worlds associated with these women through ceremony, darkness, dreamwork, movement, sound and practices of direct revelation. The intention is not simply to study their mysteries from a distance, but to explore what they might reveal when encountered through our own bodies and lives.

In a contemporary spiritual landscape increasingly clouded by smoke and mirrors, invented lineages and romanticised versions of the past, this distinction feels especially important. Rather than attempting to resurrect an ancient tradition we can no longer fully know, we will ask what it might mean to tend its surviving fragments responsibly, and to cultivate forms of women’s spiritual culture appropriate to the world in which we actually live.

MODULE I

WHO WERE THE MELISSAE?
Evidence, Myth, and Modern Reconstruction

We begin by asking what we can know about the Melissae, the “Bees”: women associated with the religious worlds of the Aegean whose title appears in connection with goddesses including Demeter and Artemis.

This opening session establishes the foundations for the course, carefully distinguishing between what is supported by archaeological and literary evidence, what belongs to mythology, and what has emerged through modern reconstruction. We will explore the bee as a sacred symbol, the world of female religious service in the ancient Mediterranean, and the deeper prehistoric contexts from which these traditions may have emerged.

Alongside the historical material, we begin our experiential journey into the mysteries of the bee through the body, imagination, and ritual practice.

THE BEE GODDESS & HER BEES

From the Bronze Age Potnia to Demeter

Before we can understand the Bee Priestesses, we must turn towards the goddesses they served.

Tracing the bee through the religious worlds of Bronze Age Crete and Anatolia into ancient Greece, we will explore her relationship with the Potnia or Mistress, Demeter, Artemis, Cybele and the wider figure of the Great Mother.

Through myth, archaeology and sacred symbolism, we will begin to uncover the cosmology that surrounded the bee and the women associated with her: a world of honey and prophecy, fertility and death, caves and mountains, the wild and the mysteries of regeneration.

MODULE III

INITIATION

Demeter, Persephone, and the Eleusinian Mysteries

Because priestesses of Demeter were called Melissae, we turn to the myth of Demeter and Persephone and the rites celebrated at Eleusis to explore what they might reveal about the initiatory dimensions of the Bee Priestesses.

We will enter the ancient pattern of descent and return, exploring darkness, grief, transformation and rebirth, and consider the particular importance of initiation within women's religious traditions of the ancient Mediterranean.

PROPHECY

The Thriai, the Delphic Bee, and the Cave of the Nymphs

Beginning with the importance of prophecy in the ancient world, we will explore its mysterious and persistent association with bees and honey.

We will meet the prophetic bee-nymphs known as the Thriai, the Pythia or “Delphic Bee,” and the nymphs of the Homeric Cave, exploring divination, altered states and the ancient understanding of prophecy as a means of maintaining right relationship between the human, natural and divine worlds.

MODULE IV

MODULE V

BULL-BEGOTTEN BEES

Dionysus, Ecstasy, Dismemberment & the Bull

Here we follow one of the oldest threads in the ancient lore of bees: their relationship with the bull.

Through the myths of Dionysus, the Minotaur and the ancient belief that bees could be born from the body of a bull, we will explore the symbolic relationship between bees, death and regeneration. We will examine the role of ecstasy, dismemberment, sacred movement and wilderness pilgrimage in Dionysian religion, particularly among his female devotees, and what these practices might reveal about the wider ritual world in which the Melissae existed.

INCUBATION

Integration, Sharing & Q&A

We conclude our journey with the ancient practice of incubation: ritual retreat into darkness for revelation and renewal.

Drawing upon incubation traditions of the ancient Mediterranean, this final session brings together the threads of the preceding weeks through experiential practice, reflection and shared inquiry. We will explore dreaming as a mode of knowledge, the movement from initiation back into ordinary life, and what it might mean to carry these ancient fragments forward without pretending to recreate a world that has been lost.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING

It seems as though Gabriela has been able to remember her past lifetimes and commune with them, as her knowledge far surpasses what I believe one can know in one lifetime.

The Bee Women information and practices are potent. It feels like the start of a life long learning. So many tellings rang true in my own knowing. It was like re-membering a life before, before, before… The group of women who I journeyed with and the sacred container we would meet in every fortnight will be deeply missed, but I know we will all be forever re-connected because of it.

Gabriela’s knowledge is so vast yet she delivers it in a way that’s easy to digest while leaving you tantalised to learn more. It was everything I desired it to be and more. Thank you Gabriela.

Gabriela is a rare find and an exquisite teacher. She is a unique combination of scholarly astuteness and mystical wisdom and is careful in guiding the way the teachings land in your body. I had the privilege of attending a number of her classes and gatherings and my God I always leave with a part of my mind blown. Thank you Gabriela for rehabilitating my spirit through your classes and mentoring sessions, I live now with more gentleness and honeyed ways of being. I cannot thank you enough! If you are like me you like the combination of geeky research and embodied knowledge, she is the teacher for you!

The amount of work and study and dedication that went into this (Gabriela did a master's degree and is diving deep into history and magic in ways I've never seen)... I appreciate the academic side of things interwoven with the work. I like data as well as dreaming. Gabriela is a scholar, so if THAT is your kind of learning, she's great for it. I know only a handful of people with this particular way and it's so so interesting.

I was drawn to Gabriela's teachings after experiencing one-too-many synchronicities involving the Bees and a call to connect with the ancient women of my Greek lineage. It felt like an undeniable calling, one that resonated deep within my bones. What Gabriela offers is far beyond words, history, or academia—she provides a transmission that profoundly shifted something within me.

When I first joined this course, I was disillusioned with modern-day spirituality, unable to find teachings that resonated with my desire for embodied feminine truth. From the very first class, Gabriela's teachings began to shift my perspective. The most significant transformation I've experienced is the softening of my once rigid mind, allowing me to embrace metaphor and connect with myth and story in ways I never could before.

Through dream work and my own practice as a facilitator, I’m now tapping into archetypal wisdom and leaving more room for the unknown and the mystery—something I had been longing for. This course has filled a soul-deep void I didn’t even know existed, and I’m profoundly grateful to have encountered the work of this very special human.

I have taken many courses with Gabriela, and learned so much, but this is nothing else than an extraordinary journey of the heart, opening up so much beautiful knowledge and wisdom of the matriarchal ancestors who came before us. Gabriela is a generous and inspirational teacher in the truest sense, because she expands and enriches the inner lives of those she teaches. I would recommend anyone to work with her with my entire being.

This course is a transformative, magical, powerful container for those looking to deepen their relationship and practice in the ways of the ancient world. Gabriela is unbelievably amazing, always finding the perfect blend of intellectual teaching, mythic imagination, and experiential process. I have had the privilege of engaging in this course multiple times now, and it blows my mind each time of the depth and transformation Gabriela's container takes me through. Each thread of the course is beautifully woven into a tapestry of an initiatory container that will transform, heal, and empower you. This work has changed my life, through re-shaping me in many ways. I am eternally grateful for Gabriela's work, packed full of levity, impeccable integrity, and the greatest compassion.

This course connected me with an ancient time period of women who seemingly have been a part of me all along, waiting to be remembered. Gabriela's teachings and transmissions of the bee priestesses encouraged my own mystical openings, expanded my relationship and  intimacy with my own inner wild, and revealed a new way of experiencing the sacred in the mundanity of everyday life. This class helped open a portal to a deep longing living in my soul.
